Every Dead Thing
by John Connolly

First time novelist Connolly writes a book every bit as good as Silence of the Lambs. Not for the squeamish and overloaded with characters, the plot is fast paced and the characters well thought out.

The Bottoms
by Joe R. Lansdale

The Bottoms is To Kill a Mockingbird with bite. A chilling coming-of-age story set in the deep south during the depression, eleven year old Harry finds himself in the middle of a hunt for a serial killer. Landsdale's characters jump off the page and his talent for spinning a story moves to new heights here.

Boy in the Water
by Stephen Dobyns

Stephen Dobyns writes a scary story that will keep you riveted. Set in a remote boarding school in the mountains of New Hampshire, this psychological thriller is a tense tale, the kind that would be at home being told around the campfire.

Winter of the Wold Moon by Steve Hamilton
Boundary Waters by William Kent Krueger

Okay, I cheated here. However, both books are sequels, both books advance their characters to new depths, and both are highly entertaining mysteries that will not disappoint.

Tangerine
by Edward Bloor

One of my favorite children's books of the year is also an excellent mystery. Twelve year old Paul is legally blind, but is able to "see" what most of his family is missing. His struggle to get through life is absorbing and heart wrenching. Filled with humor, intrigue, sinkholes, and bullies, Paul is a character youll be cheering for.
