URBAN MYTHS
by Janis Raley

One of the more famous urban legends in Texas is that of the haunted railroad crossing in San Antonio just South of the San Juan Mission. It is here that the ghosts of children, killed when a North bound train collided with their stalled school bus, push cars across the same tracks to a safety they could not reach themselves. According to the legend, a bumper dusted with talcum powder will reveal tiny hand prints of the ghost children, left when they pushed the car across the tracks. Read on about the legend of the ghost tracks.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, here are a couple of recipes to wow your guests with. Check out the other goodies in
Krstl's Kitchen.

Squash Soup

1 acorn squash *
1 can (14-1/2 oz.) chicken broth
1 cup sliced carrot
1/3 cup chopped onion
1/4 teaspoon dried basil leaves, crushed
3/4 cup MIRACLE WHIP® Salad Dressing, divided
1 Tablespoon milk

*Or substitute 1 package (12 oz.) frozen cooked winter squash for the fresh acorn squash. Do not microwave.

Pierce squash several times with a fork. Microwave whole squash on HIGH 2 minutes. Cut squash in half lengthwise; remove seeds. Place squash, cut-sides up, in a shallow microwavable baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap; vent. Microwave on HIGH 8 to 10 minutes or until fork-tender, turning dish every 4 minutes. (Microwave temps may vary, please do not overcook) Let stand 5 minutes. Scoop out squash; mash.

Add all remaining ingredients except salad dressing and milk to the mashed squash and bring to a boil in medium saucepan; cover. Reduce heat to medium; simmer 12 to 15 minutes or until carrots and onions are tender. Whisk in 1/2 cup salad dressing; heat thoroughly, stirring occasionally.

Mix remaining 1/4 cup salad dressing and milk. Spoon the soup into individual serving bowls. Top with the salad dressing mixture; swirl gently with spoon.

"THE INSIDER"

by Steve Rhodes - Condensed

A picture that deserves to be remembered at Oscar time, The Insider tells a mesmerizing true story that's in equal measure drama, thriller, and mystery. With never a dull moment, the story still manages to consider the entirety of people's lives and families and delve into the minutiae of a journalistic investigation. The movie has only one possible flaw -- it's longer than normal at over 2½ hours. Its length, however, turns out to be both necessary and beneficial.

The story concerns Dr. Jeffrey Wigand, the former head of research at the Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company. A proud man of high integrity, Wigand has been fired by the company, which is scared that he will break his confidentiality agreement and reveal certain hidden truths. Wigand does not want to jeopardize his severance package and the medical insurance that the company has promised. If you have a loving family and expensive possessions, would you risk losing them, just because your integrity demanded it? In reality, most of us would pass. It is for just that reason that this film, with its superlative writing, production, and acting, becomes so engrossing.
