THEME:
Several people correctly identified the theme. With the
exception of one oddball (see below), one half of the
song titles in this quiz made reference to a member of a
group that recorded the other half of the songs in this
quiz. It sounds more confusing than it is. Here are the
matchups:
ROSE Garden ==> Axl ROSE
(of Guns N' Roses), singers of Live And Let Die
DIANA ==> DIANA
Ross, singer of I'm Gonna Make You Love Me
Beast of BURDEN ==> Eric BURDON,
singer of Spill The Wine
Love Won't Let Me WAIT ==> John WAITE,
lead singer of The Babys (Every Time I Think Of You)
Basketball JONES ==> Davy JONES,
singer on A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You
Amazing GRACE ==> GRACE
Slick, singer of Somebody To Love
Harper VALLEY P.T.A. ==> Frankie VALLI,
singer of Let's Hang On!
Do The FREDDIE ==> FREDDIE
Mercury, singer of Radio Ga-Ga
RINGO ==> RINGO
Starr, performer on Rocky Raccoon
Turn the PAGE ==> Jimmy PAGE,
performer on D'yer Mak'er
The Late, Great Johnny ACE ==> ACE
Frehley of Kiss (Beth)
EDGE of Seventeen ==> Dave "The EDGE"
Evans of U2 (In God's Country)
and the song that didn't quite fit the same pattern:
The BUCKINGHAMS ==> Lindsey BUCKINGHAM,
performer on Hold On
TRIVIA:
Just in case you ever wondered: "Harper Valley
P.T.A" is the only #1 song that managed to inspire
both a theatrical movie and a television series. Tom T.
Hall wrote the 1968 song, which was recorded by an
unknown Nashville secretary, Jeannie C. Riley. The record
leapt from 81 to 7 on the Billboard charts in its first
week, and reached the top of the charts in week five.
Ten years later, Barbara Eden starred in a film based on
the storyline of the young widow who goes to battle with
the local P.T.A. When NBC broadcast the network televison
premiere of the film on February 24, 1980, it turned out
to be the highest rated program of the week. Come 1981,
"Harper Valley P.T.A." (the movie) had given
rise to "Harper Valley P.T.A." (the television
series), which ran for parts of two years with Barbara
Eden recreating her role as Stella Johnson.
The Monkees' "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit
You", like "I'm a Believer", was written
by Neil Diamond. When a song tops out at Number 2 on the
Billboard charts, it always makes me wonder what song
kept it from the top - in the case of "A Little Bit
Me", that powerful chart-topper was Nancy and Frank
Sinatra's "Somethin' Stupid", which topped the
charts for 4 weeks in April and early May of 1967.
"Somethin' Stupid" was Frank's last visit to
the Top 20, and it's interesting to note that daughter
Nancy had almost as many #1 hits as her dad - her
"Somethin' Stupid" and "These Boots Are
Made For Walkin'", are topped only by her dad's
credit for "Somethin' Stupid", plus
"Strangers In The Night", and "Learnin'
The Blues", way back in 1955.
Of course Lorne Greene, the singer of the #1 hit
"Ringo", was the same Lorne Greene who starred
in "Bonanza" and "Battlestar
Galactica". Greene became the second Canadian to
ever top the American charts - coincidentally the second
song in this quiz, Paul Anka's "Diana", was the
first song to accomplish that feat. Greene's deep
baritone earned him more than just television and music
fame - in 1940, the 25-year-old Greene replaced Charles
Jennings (the father of ABC-anchor Peter Jennings), as
lead news anchor for the Canadian Broadcasting radio
network.
Led Zeppelin buffs argued for many years about the
meaning of the title to "D'yer Mak'er", but
bassist John Paul Jones told a 1993 radio interviewer
that the phrase comes from an old cockney vaudeville
joke. Two men are sitting in a bar tipping back a few,
when one tells the other that he and his wife have just
returned from a trip to the West Indies.
"Jamaica?", asks the one. "No, she went on
'er own accord", replies the other. A song is born.
